What's New in Federal Student Loans

Major changes are coming in 2026. Here is what your employees need to know and what you can do to help them prepare.

Effective July 1, 2026

SAVE Plan Ending - New Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) Launching

The SAVE plan will be terminated and replaced by the new Repayment Assistance Plan. Only two income-driven repayment plans will remain for new borrowers. IBR will be available only for loans taken out before July 1, 2026. Borrowers not enrolled in the right plan may see significantly higher payments.

PSLF Borrowers Must Download and Verify Repayment History

Borrowers pursuing Public Service Loan Forgiveness should log in to StudentAid.gov now, download their full payment history, and verify all qualifying payments are recorded before the July 1 deadline. Errors in payment records are common and take time to correct.

2026 Update

Wage Garnishment Resuming on Defaulted Loans

The collections pause on defaulted federal loans is ending. Borrowers with defaulted loans may face wage garnishment, tax refund seizure, and loss of access to deferment. Thrive Advisors specialize in default rehabilitation and garnishment relief.

2026 Update

Parent PLUS Loan Borrowing Becoming More Restricted

New rules restrict Parent PLUS borrowing and limit repayment plan options. Existing Parent PLUS borrowers should review the double-consolidation strategy now, before July 1, to preserve access to income-driven repayment options.
